Protecting forests in Asia
Working with forests to reduce carbon emissions is a relatively new concept. Projects in this field no not produce renewable energy, but they are a way of offsetting carbon emissions. Forests, particularly tropical forests, are carbon sinks and stock a significant amount of carbon. This means that deforestation causes carbon emissions to increase as well as destroying habitats and wildlife. Carbon credit projects aim to stop deforestation as well as providing a carbon offsetting option for those who purchase them. Carbon credits are allocated to portions of forest and each one bought will protect that piece of land from being destroyed. The amount of carbon stocked in the land and also converted into oxygen by the trees will then not enter the atmosphere, hence offsetting carbon produced by industrial activity such as air travel.

Canigou is actively looking for forestry offset projects.

In focus: What are carbon credits

Carbon credit projects must meet certain standards in order to ensure that the land is protected and also managed. Tropical forests are principally situated in third world countries where illegal logging provides local communities with the majority of their income. The projects Canigou are involved in work to make sure that their communities are offered new positions in forest management and regeneration to replace their work in illegal logging. The provides an injection of capital into the local economy and provides a sustainable income for many of the community.

Forest regeneration is an essential part of carbon credit projects as it involves replanting trees in areas that have suffered deforestation. This means that the forests can heal and begin to cover larger areas again. Tropical forests can regenerate very quickly meaning that this will make a significant different in forest size.
The other key element of carbon credit project is to protect the local wildlife, tropical forests house 80% of the worlds documented species. By protecting them whole ecosystems can avoid extinction and preserve biodiversity for generations to come.
We are currently in an extinction crisis in addition to a climate crisis. Canigou is pleased to be working in carbon credit projects as they provide a solution to both of these problems. Our current carbon credit project is set to take place in Indonesia. We are however looking into more projects to expand our forest work. We would adopt the same ethos in all carbon credit projects, they must support the local community, provide carbon offsetting and protect endemic species.
